Overview

Wordle for Google Sheets is a Google Sheets™ editor add-on that lets users play Wordle-style word puzzles directly inside Google Sheets™. Users can create and manage their own word categories and word lists. This policy explains what data the add-on accesses, how it is used, where it is stored, and what choices users have.

Data we access (Google user data)

When you use the add-on in Google Sheets™, the add-on may access the following data only within the active spreadsheet where you run the add-on:

A) Google Sheets™ content in the active spreadsheet

  • Cell values you enter (example: word lists in the “Wordle Words” sheet)

  • Sheet names and sheet structure (example: creating or restoring the “Wordle Game” and “Wordle Words” sheets)

  • Formatting information (example: background colors, borders, font styling)

  • Selection and input cell data needed to evaluate guesses and display results

B) Add-on UI within Google Sheets™

  • The add-on displays a sidebar and modal dialogs (instructions).

  • These UI surfaces run only inside Google Sheets™.

Data protection and security

We take reasonable measures to protect data accessed by this add-on. The add-on operates entirely within Google Sheets™ and uses Google’s built-in authentication, authorization, and security infrastructure.

All spreadsheet data accessed by the add-on remains in the user’s Google Sheets™ file and is stored on Google’s servers. The add-on does not transmit spreadsheet content to external servers, does not store data in external databases, and does not maintain copies of user data outside the user’s spreadsheet.

Access to Google Sheets™ data is limited to the minimum necessary to provide the add-on’s functionality and is restricted to the active spreadsheet where the user runs the add-on. The add-on does not browse Google Drive™, list files, or access spreadsheets without direct user interaction.

Any authorization tokens used by the add-on are managed by Google and are not stored or logged by the developer. The developer does not have access to users’ spreadsheet content.

Security measures
The add-on relies on Google’s™ secure infrastructure to protect user data. All data is transmitted and stored using Google’s™ encrypted connections and access controls. Only the authenticated user and Google’s™ systems can access spreadsheet data. The developer does not have direct access to user spreadsheets, and no data is stored outside Google’s™ secure environment.

Important clarification

  • The add-on does not access Gmail™.

  • The add-on does not access Google Drive™ file lists and does not browse Google Drive™.

  • The add-on does not access Google Contacts™ or Google Calendar™.

  • The add-on does not read or write files outside the active spreadsheet.

  • The add-on may copy starter template sheets from a developer-owned template spreadsheet into your current spreadsheet. This template source is owned and managed by the developer and is not part of your Google Drive™.

How we use the data

Accessed data is used only to provide the add-on’s features, including:

  • Reading word lists and categories you define

  • Selecting and validating a secret word for gameplay

  • Writing guess results and visual feedback to the game board

  • Creating, restoring, or repairing required sheets if they are missing

  • Displaying the sidebar and instructions inside Google Sheets™

  • Saving basic user preferences (such as light or dark theme)

Data storage

  • Your word lists, categories, guesses, and game boards are stored only in your Google Sheets™ file.

  • The add-on does not store spreadsheet data on external servers.

  • The add-on does not maintain a separate database of user data.

Data sharing and transfers

  • We do not sell, rent, or share personal data.

  • We do not transfer Google user data to third-party services.

  • All data access occurs within Google’s Apps Script environment.

Data retention and deletion

  • Because all data lives in your spreadsheet, you control retention.

  • You can edit or delete word lists, categories, guesses, or entire sheets at any time.

  • You can stop using or uninstall the add-on at any time.

  • The add-on does not retain copies of your spreadsheet content outside your spreadsheet.

Security

  • The add-on uses Google™ authentication and authorization mechanisms.

  • The add-on runs within Google Apps Script.

  • We do not store OAuth tokens or spreadsheet content on external servers.

Permissions and scopes

The add-on requests only the permissions required to operate in Google Sheets™:

  • Google Sheets™ access: to read and edit the active spreadsheet where you use the add-on

  • Container UI access: to display sidebars, menus, and dialogs inside Google Sheets™

Compliance with Google API Services User Data Policy

Our use of information received from Google APIs complies with the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Google user data is used only to provide the add-on’s user-facing functionality and is not used for advertising, profiling, or resale.

Children’s privacy

This add-on is suitable for educational and classroom use. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Any content entered into the spreadsheet is provided by the user or the user’s organization and remains in the spreadsheet they control.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will update the “Last updated” date above when changes are made.

Agreement to these Terms

By installing or using this app, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the add-on.

The Service

Wordle for Google Sheets is a Google Sheets™ editor add-on that allows users to play Wordle-style word puzzles directly within Google Sheets™ using customizable word lists and categories.

User responsibilities

You are responsible for:

  • Your use of the add-on and any content you enter into your spreadsheet

  • Ensuring you have permission to use any words, names, or content you add

  • Reviewing game content and results before sharing or distributing spreadsheets

Permissions

The add-on requires access to the active spreadsheet in which it is used in order to create and format the game board, read word lists, and evaluate guesses. The add-on does not access your Google Drive™ file list and does not store spreadsheet content outside your spreadsheet.

Intellectual property

The add-on, associated code, branding, and template materials are owned by the developer. You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the add-on for its intended purpose.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Attempt to reverse engineer, abuse, or interfere with the add-on

  • Use the add-on in violation of applicable laws or regulations

  • Distribute the add-on as your own product or remove required attribution

Availability and changes

We may update, modify, or discontinue features at any time. We do not guarantee uninterrupted availability.

Disclaimer

The add-on is provided as is without warranties of any kind. You use it at your own risk.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the developer will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for loss of data, profits, or business arising from use of the add-on.

Termination

You may stop using the add-on or uninstall it at any time. These Terms remain effective to the extent necessary to cover ownership, disclaimers, and limitation of liability.
